THE URGENT SITUATION IN KENYA

“Social justice is the best means to eliminate terrorism.” - Nobel Prize Winner, Shinin Ebadi

WHAT HAPPENED? On Saturday, September 21, 2013, the Somalia-based al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab terrorist group entered an upscale mall in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and opened fire on unarmed civilians wounding at least 239 people (including at least five Americans) and killing more than 62 people. As of Tuesday, September 24, 2013, the seige is “over.”  But Kenyans are going to be feeling this attack for a long time.  This is one of the worst terrorist attacks in Kenya in two decades.

WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? This is a pure act of terrorism by a militant arm of the same terrorists that were behind what happened in New York City on 9/11. Now known as the Westgate Shooting, this is a pure act of terrorism targeted at innocent civilians in an effort to cripple the country. The terrorists claim that their act was in retaliation to Kenyan peace keeping troops that are currently in Somalia.

WHY SHOULD WE CARE? Boston recently experienced its own form of terrorism with the bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon.  Regardless of the reason, political, religious or otherwise, terrorism in any form is unacceptable. According to Nobel Prize winner and first Iranian female judge, Shirin Ebadi, “One must destroy the root causes of terrorism: it is prejudice and injustice that causes people to set themselves and others on fire,” she said. Since prejudice results from ignorance, it is through education that we must achieve peace.  We are a global society and terrorism is not unique to Boston, the US, the developing world, Africa or any isolated area.  We are ALL impacted by these violations against humanity.
